Lyrics

I'm go-ing to a town that has alr-ea-dy been burnt down I'm go-ing to a place that has al-rea-dy been dis-graced I'm gon-na see some folks who have al-rea-dy been let down I'm so tired of A-me-ri-ca I'm gon-na make it up for all of the Sun- day Times I'm gon-na make it up for all of the nur- sery rhymes They ne-ver rea-lly seem to want to tell the truth I'm so tired of you, A-me-ri-ca Ma-king my own way home Ain't gon-na be a-lone I got a life to lead, A-me-ri-ca I got a life to lead Tell mich Do you rea-lly think you go to hell for ha-ving loved? Tell me E-nough for thin-king e-very-thing that you've done is good I rea-lly need to know Af- ter soa-king the bo-dy of Je- sus Christ in blood I'm so tired of A-me-ri-ca I rea-lly need to know I may just ne-ver see you a-gain or might as well You took ad-van-tage of a world that loved you well I'm go-ing to a town that has al-rea-dy been burnt down I'm so tired of you, A-me-ri-ca Ma-king my own way home Ain't gon-na be a-lone I've got a life to lead, A-me-ri-ca I got a life to lead I got a soul to feed I got a dream to heed And that's all I need Ma-king my own way home Ain't gon-na be a-lone I'm go-ing to the town that has al- rea-dy been burnt down

Notice

Also, check out my chords for this song: www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/r/rufus_wainwright/goin g_to_a_town_ver4_crd.htm I think this song is about Rufus' obvious contempt for the Bush administration, its tyrannical foreign policy and the American Christian church with its ill view on homosexuality. He once stated in an interview that if Bush was elected, he would emigrate from America, and he then ended up doing so when Bush was re-elected. He moved to Berlin instead - expecting to find a "burnt down, disgraced" town. But if you've been to Berlin, you'll know that it's the exact opposite, and I think that's what inspired the general adventurous and jolly sound of Release the Stars. Rufus once said about the song: "I wrote that in about five minutes. I remember distinctly that I was waiting to go to dinner and I had about twenty minutes to spare. I offhandedly said: "I think I'll go down and fuck around on the piano" and all of a sudden that song was finished. It sort of arrived. Those are always the best ones; they're from some nether region that you have no control over."
